In order to begin studying prefixes…
Para empezar a estudiar los prefijos…
What is a prefix?
A meaningful group of letters attached to the beginning of a root
word to create a new word and change its meaning.
The prefix is one of the two forms used in affixation processes in
order to create new words (the other affix used in the affixation processes
is the suffix).
*The root word is the most basic unit of the part of a word; it
shows us the origin of many words (some words share the same root word in
their origin), the root word may have or may not have in itself a meaning as
word.
|
|
What is affixation?
The
process of forming a new word by adding one or several suffixes, prefixes or a
combination of these both affixes to a pre-existing root word.
¿Qué es la afijación?
El
proceso de formar una nueva palabra mediante añadir uno o más sufijos, prefijos
o una combinación de ambos afijos a una raíz preexistente.
Why should I invest my time in
studying prefixes or suffixes?
Because it is one of the most prolific ways for the present-day
English in incorporating new words into the dictionary at all levels (either
technical, commonly used or even jargon).
Because mastering affixes we are laying the groundwork for learning
faster new vocabulary, which include suffixes or prefixes, being sometimes
even able of meeting a word for the first time and discovering its meaning.
Will develop our spelling and reading skills in English.
Without any doubt we will optimize in the long-term the time invested
in this study.
|
¿Porque debería invertir mi tiempo en
estudiar prefijos o sufijos?

The
next example provided below is showing us how a prefix changes the meaning of a
verb.
El
siguiente ejemplo proporcionado a continuación nos está mostrando como un
prefijo cambia el significado de un verbo.
Dis (prefix
that means not) + like (verb)
= dislike (not like)
Dis (prefijo que
significa no) + like (verbo
gustar)= dislike (no me
gusta)

We are going to see some examples
in order to check how this process sometimes it will not be as easy as the
aforementioned example:
I) The adjective “typical”,
which means characteristic or distinctive.
If we add the prefix a- ,that means “without” or
“not”, we obtain the adjective:
“atypical” : something not characteristic or distinctive.
In this first example we
observe how the prefix generates an adjective that means just the opposite
(antonym) with respect to the adjective that we had before adding the prefix.
The challenge of knowing which one of the
different prefix meanings must be applied when there are more than one that
can be used for that prefix…
In this first example we
use “not”, but if I told you to form with the same prefix another adjective,
starting out with the suffix “–morphous” (which means having a specified
shape), the resulting adjective “amorphous”(means without shape) would take
the meaning “without” from the prefix a-.
In these examples, your
own knowledge about the suffix or adjective meaning is what helps you to
provide the meaning of the prefix that fits better.
|
Vamos a ver algunos ejemplos para
comprobar como este proceso en algunas ocasiones no será tan sencillo como el
ejemplo arriba citado:
I) El adjetivo “typical” (típico) sabemos que significa algo
característico, o propio. Si añadimos el prefijo a- que significa
“sin” (without) o “no” (not) obtenemos el adjetivo:
“atypical” (atípico) : algo no
|
II) In other occasions, a
well-known adjective as “dexterous” (skilled with one’s hand) will not be the
used form in the word formation.
We will use a variant adjective as “dextrous” instead.
So, in order to form the
word “ambidextrous” in English:
ambi- (both) + dextrous (skilled) = ambidextrous
(equally able with both hands).
|
II) En otras ocasiones, un adjetivo bien conocido como “dexterous”
(diestro o hábil) no será el utilizado en la formación de palabras.
En su lugar usaremos una variante de adjetivo como “dextrous”.
Así, para formar la palabra
ambidiestro en inglés:
ambi- (both/ambas) + dextrous(skilled) =
ambidextrous (igualmente capacitado con ambas manos).
|
III) We can also find a root word without meaning by itself as a word in the present-day English,
as for example “bellum”, evolved from the Old Latin word “duellum”,(which
means war).
Anti- (against) + bellum (war) = antibellum (against
the war)
This word is a clear
example of how English is evolving. It requires an updated version of the
dictionary or an Urban Dictionary
in order to discover its meaning.
|
III) Nos podemos encontrar
